Engineered nutrition refers to foods that have been specially formulated with a precise nutrient profile to produce specific metabolic effects. Infant formulas are an example of one of the most commonly used engineered foods. Nutrient levels in these products are specially formulated to enhace the growth and development of newborns.
Most notable recently is the engineered nutrition from the National Cancer Institute's designer foods program. The institute's scientists have isolated nutrients in natural food that may have anti-cancer effects, concentrated them and added them to specially manufactured foods. If they are consumed regularly, these foods may prove to have vital cancer-fighting effects.
