To achieve the highest possible VO2max, do you begin the training program with an aerobic base consisting of low intensity, long duration training, followed by a shorter period of high intensity training?

Research shows no evidence that low intensity, long duration training prior to high intensity training might be more effective than starting right out with high intensity workouts for improving VO2max. However, researchers did caution that athletes with low fitness would be more prone to injury and cardiovascular problems if they commenced their exercise program at a high intensity.
