Coach,

I am trying to get back into shape in order to participate in track and field in the Spring. When I run for a long period of time, I start to feel pressure in my lower back. I know that it may be from weak abdominals, but mine are strong. What exercises could I do to in order to strengthen my back?

Thank you.

When I am coaching athletes, especially in the conditioning period and during hill training, even the talented athletes complain of lower back pain. When we start the weight training schedule, the back problems disappear.

In the web site under the Coaching section, there is a strength training program with exercises. The article is entitled "Strength Training Workouts for Runners" and the link is as follows:

If you work all the muscles in the body it will put you in balance strength-wise. Give this program three to four weeks to see if you feel an improvement in your back.
