Subject: In and Out of the Curves

Coach,
I need help with my son's running in and out the curves in track. He is a freshman and runs the 200 in 22.65 and the 100 in 11.44. His long jump is 20.05 and he runs the 4x 400 with a time of 54.

What do you think?
Anthony

Anthony:

Your son's 200 meter time is a good time and better than what he should be running in the 100 meter and the 4x400 meter.
His long jump is very good.

He needs to work on out of the blocks and on acceleration because his 100 meter time is slower than his 200 meter time.

He also needs workouts with intensity (speed - endurance) to improve in the 400 meters. Compared to his 200 meter time, his 400 meter time is slow.

With regard to running in and out of the curves, he should not be slowing down on the curves. I believe he is taking the curves slow. He should run the curves with the same intensity in the 400 meter race as he runs the curve in the 200 meter race.
