In The Classroom

Plan for the Shot Put

SAFETY TIPS
- Never turn your back on the throwing circle.
- Rather than have retrievers stand in the back of the landing sector, have each student retrieve their own ball or shot. Instruct students to always make certain no one is in the landing sector before they throw.
- Have a "Safety Watcher" (a student who is not participating) watch both the landing sector and the putter. Allow no put to be made until he/she calls "'Safe to throw."'
- Use softballs to introduce the proper grip & release, and the lighter girls 4kg shot to facilitate learning proper putting technique.

CLASS ACTIVITIES

1. Using a softball, practice the proper grip-and arm position:
The shot should be cradled-not gripped-with the thumb holding the ball at the base of all four fingers. The put begins with the shot hold under the chin with the elbow up and behind the shoulder.

2. Using softball, practice the proper release:
- The shot is propelled with a, pushing action--not a throw-with the elbow staying behind the hand and the heel of the palm advancing in front of the shot as the arm straightens out.

3. Practice putting softball:
Have each student stand at the front of the throwing circle with both feet against the shot too board, turn the shoulders 90-degrees, and push the ball from under the chin with the elbow raised behind the hand. Have students who demonstrate the proper grip and release repeat the drill using a 4kg shot.

4. Practice standing puts:
Have right-handed cutters '1) place the outside of the left foot against the toe board at the front of the throwing circle, and the right foot near the middle of the ring with the toe of the left foot in-line with the heel of the right foot (opposite positioning for left-handed throwers), 2) turn the shoulders toward the back of the ring, 3) bend at the waist, 4) rise, turn and release while driving off the right foot

5. Practice standing puts with a "reverse'@:
-Have students repeat the procedures in step-4, reversing the drive foot with the front foot as they release the shot.
