Plan for the Pole Vault

SAFETY TIPS
- Be sure the pole vault pit is properly assembled with all sections strapped together, the landing pad attached, and any protruding surfaces around the pit covered with foam padding.
- Be sure the runway and take-off area is a clean surface with good footing.
- Spot take-off drills by placing your hand in the small of the student's back to insure they land on their feet.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED
One vaulting pole for every 6 students. (Poles should be a variety of weight-tests.) Long jump p4
Fully assembled pole vault pit

CLASS ACTIVITIES

1. Practice gripping the pole: (Reverse instructions for left-handers) Instruct students to hold the pole virtually, with the butt-plug end of the pole on the ground and the right hand slightly higher than the head. The /left hand should grip the pole. Thumb-up, approximately 24set below the right hand.

2. Practice planting the pole: Have students' line-up facing the curb of the track, then 1) walk towards the curb and place the bottom of the pole next to the hurdle and, 2) raise both hands directly over their head with the pole directly in front as the tip nears the curb.

3. Practice taking-off and riding the pole: Move the class to the long jump pit and dig a 6-inch deep hole in the sand toward the front of the pit. Instruct students to take 5-6 jogging strides down the long jump runway, plant the end of the pole in the hole, hold on, and ride the pole, landing with both feet in the sand without letting go of the pole. After they can swing into the sand pit, have them repeat the drill turning as they swing forward so they will land on both feet in the sand facing back towards the runway.

4. Practice taking-off onto the pole vault pit: Have students do the same drill with a slightly higher grip, they should plant the pole into the vault box, swing up. And land with both feet on the pole vault pit. Students who master the drill then can practice turning while they swing forward and land with both feet in the pit facing back towards the runway.
